- Each entry must be submitted into one of the following categories:
- Collaboration — an application or tool that helps users work together and interact. This can be collaborative editors, front-ends for a version control that are not just useful for developers, chat programs, easy file transfer over network, white-board applications, soft-phones.
- Education — a piece of science or educational software (including engineering software). Every math, science, GIS, CAD or so software. We do not expect full features CAD software but rather something that helps people understanding things.
- Project Management — help manage small projects. This can also include both scheduling and time tracking.
- Automation — an application that automates tedious tasks. This can be clever application launchers, macro recorders/editors, scripting applications, adding scripts to file managers.
- Demo — impress us! You easily can create a text editor with Qt. Very impressive. Make something cooler. Show us what Qt can do.
- Plasmoid — a KDE 4 plasmoid. Create an innovative, useful, dashing plasmoid that makes the users' lives easier, more beautiful or just plain fun.
- Newcomer — a new application developed for the contest. Do whatever you want. You bring the code, you bring the idea.
Take care to pick the category where your entry fits in best. - The submissions will be judged according to the following aspects (no particular order):
- completeness,
- portability between platforms,
- quality of code,
- quality of documentation,
- usefulness,
- uniqueness,
- user-friendliness,
- use of Qt technology,
- number of developers involved in the project.
- The contest is open to individuals or groups of individuals limited to five people. Corporate entries are not accepted. The individuals must be the authors and major contributors of the entering software.
- The submitted software must not have won any comparable contest before.
- The contestants may not be related to or part of any of the organizing parties.
- The submission must use Qt 4 technology.
- The used Qt 4 technology must have been released, i.e. not snapshots. Plasmoid entries must compile against KDE 4.0.x or 4.1.x (updated April 9).
- The submission should favor use of Qt technology over any other framework or dependency if possible. The submission may depend on frameworks or libraries other than Qt 4 (or its dependencies) if a particular functionality is not possible or very time consuming to achieve using Qt 4 technology.
- The submission must be open source software.
- The submission must be portable between at least two of the main Qt platforms (Windows, Unix/X11 and Mac OS X) except for Plasmoid entries.
- The submission must be able to run with a user interface in English.
- The submissions should contain the software for the contest, a list of authors (project members) and documentation. These documents must be available in English. The submission should be a complete piece of software.
- The submissions should consist of source code, resource data and (where applicable) a QMake project. The entries may use any publicly available language binding for Qt, for example: C++, PyQt and Qt Jambi. If it is motivated other build systems than QMake are accepted but will be considered a non-Qt dependency. Binary only submissions are not assessed.
- The organizing parties reserve the right to merge or disband any category. For example in case not enough entries are submitted.
- The organizing parties reserve the right to reject any submission. For example if we feel that the application does not fit into a category or meet the rules of the contest.
- The winner, first and second runner ups for each category will be chosen by delegates from the organizing parties.
- Special prizes will also be awarded to submissions that show extraordinary qualities.
- The winner, first and second runner ups agree that the organizing parties can publish details about the entry such as the developers’ names, a description of the submission, etc. This information will also be made available to the organizing parties for business use.
- The results of the competition are final and cannot be appealed.
- The entries must be registered using the form available at http://contest.qtcentre.org/register before submitting the entry.
- The registration must have been completed before May 31 2008.
- The final submission of each entry must be available to the organizing parties before September 30 2008.
- Rules and regulations are subject to change during the contest. Any changes will be announced on the contest website.
