Is this sort of a catch-all for applications that don't fit into the other categories? I am working on a journaling application in Qt, but my intent is not really for it to be a `demo', rather it is meant to be practical and useful. Does that still fit in under the category?

I agree that we need more clarification.
I cannot decide whether to submit in Demo category or Newcomer category. It is not released before but I can't say that it is being developed for the contest. Also it is designed to be used not for being a fancy demo. Last year's Desktop Application category was a very nice fit.
Can organizers give some suggestions?

I'm not the one deciding about categories, I'll pass the word to people who are, but my personal opinion is that demo should demonstrate Qt's capabilities or be something really fancy, like "Qt Demo" app bundled with Qt. But I don't know if that is what the author had in mind :)

The difference between the demo and newcomer is, that the primary goal of a newcomer should be to develop a fully functional application. A demo shows some cool aspect what you can do but it usually does not more than let some people say: Wow, cool.

So the question is: Can we submit an application that is started to be developed before the contest announcement but not released, to the Newcomer category?

How long before?

I started at the end of summer 2007. But didn't spend much time to finish the project. Contest deadline might be a nice motivation ;)

Doesn't it fit in any of the other categories?

Not really, it is a personal document management and note taking application.

I likewise started before -- Fall 2007, more or less.

Sounds like "Collaboration" category to me!

So, would the application I described fit into any of these categories? If so, which one? Apologies for bumping the thread.

I think it fits into "project management".

Ok, cool. I will try submitting under that, then. Thank you!
