do anybody know where i can find a "pattern" (no design pattern) definition (mathematical i mean).

Roughly a “pattern” is a set of instances which shares some regularities and they are similar to each other in some measure. A pattern is something that occurs many times and sometimes it can affected by noise or distortion.
I need a matemathical or statistical definition (not complex). Any pointers, please?
I can invented it but I suppose it'll be too complex for me..
