Back in Qt3, I'm pretty sure there was a group of widgets for customized drawing and hit detection: QCanvas, QCanvasItem.

I can't find mention of them in Qt4's documentation. Do they have replacements in qt4?

I can't find mention of them in Qt4's documentation.
Look for Q3Canvas in Qt3 Support module. There is also a Qt4 port of QCanvas (you can find it on Trolltech's FTP server).

Not yet, in Qt 4.2 there will be QGraphicsView (http://blogs.qtdeveloper.net/archives/2006/05/01/a-graphicsview-sneak-peek/).
