CanvasItem in pyqt3

Can someone tell me if all items displayed in a qt3 canvas are bitmap or can it accept a series of formatted x,y coordinates and plot lines based on those xy values? Basically what I want to do is take an hpgl file that have been seperated into chunks based on pen colors and asign them layers in a canvas. eg: 2345 7821 is a xy pair.
