Maximize Window in Background

I have a main window which contains embedded sub windows for graphics. The program may or may not start as maximized but I need to know the size of the subwindow when the main parent window is maximized without maximizing it (or showing it's been maximized). Can a window maximized in the background (just perform the resize/calculations internally) without showing it's maximized and then restore it again?
