VirtualBox compiling is %100 safe

I am thinking to compile the code on the VirtualBox with QT Creator. Is that %100 safe? I mean, is it the same thing to compile directly on the operating system which installed on running?

Yes, the operating system inside the virtual machine is a real operating system.

To affirm Chris' answer: yes, I have already done it several times with Windows XP in a virtualbox running on Linux and Mac!
