    Default Eye Candies

I am looking for methods to make the GUI look good,
perhaps using style sheets, custom widgets...

    Any ideas/concepts/suggestions?

You can see Qt Demos -> Widgets -> Styles / StyleSheets

Also in book C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4 2nd Edition, you will find examples
Also in Wiki you might find some stylish AeroButton. You can get hint from that

Reading recent Qt Quarterly and Qt Labs articles is a good idea. You can even use Qt Kinetics to have a kinetic interface.
Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile.
