    Default Trouble with CRC-32 function

    Hi.
    I'm trying to write CRC-32 hashing function with Qt types, but I've encountered a problem. When I'm hashing text file, checksum is OK, but when I try to hash binary file, checksum is bad. What am I doing wrong?

    Qt Code:
    1. #define BUFSIZE 8192
    2.
    3. const quint32 crc32_tab[256] =
    4. {
    5. 0x00000000, 0x77073096, 0xee0e612c, 0x990951ba,

    The signed char value buf[i] is sign-extended to 32-bits when you combine it with the 32-bit result of (crc32 & 0xff). When buf[i] is negative (i.e. >127 when char is signed) this will cause an out-of-bounds access on your CRC array. For example:
    Qt Code:
    1. quint32 crc = 0x00000000;
    2. char c = 0xaa;
    3. qDebug()
    4. << QString::number((crc & 0xff) ^ c, 16) // your code
    5. << QString::number((crc & 0xff) ^ (c & 0xff), 16)
    6. << QString::number((crc ^ c) & 0xff, 16);
    To copy to clipboard, switch view to plain text mode
    prints:
    Qt Code:
    1. "ffffffaa" "aa" "aa"
    To copy to clipboard, switch view to plain text mode

    This:
    Qt Code:
    1. crc32 = (crc32 >> 8) ^ crc32_tab[(crc32 & 0xff) ^ buf[i]];
    To copy to clipboard, switch view to plain text mode
    should be this:
    Qt Code:
    1. crc32 = (crc32 >> 8) ^ crc32_tab[(crc32 & 0xff) ^ (buf[i] & 0xff)];
    2. OR
    3. crc32 = (crc32 >> 8) ^ crc32_tab[(crc32 ^ buf[i]) & 0xff];
    To copy to clipboard, switch view to plain text mode

    Thanks for reply.
    Yes, now program displaying proper value of checksum. But value is without leading zeros. How to fix that? I returning checksum as QByteArray in hex.

    Default Re: Trouble with CRC-32 function

    Here is a couple of ways (there are probably many of varying efficiency):
    Qt Code:
    1. quint32 crc = 0x00123456;
    2. QByteArray result = QByteArray::number(crc, 16);
    3. result.prepend("00000000");
    4. result = result.right(8);
    5. qDebug() << result;
    6.
    7. result = QByteArray::number(crc, 16);
    8. result = result.rightJustified(8, '0', false);
    9. qDebug() << result;
    10.
    11. // condense the previous to
    12. result = QByteArray::number(crc, 16).rightJustified(8, '0', false);
    13. qDebug() << result;
    To copy to clipboard, switch view to plain text mode
    or you could use QString::arg() and an appropriate set of parameters and have a QString return.
