I tend to favor compact code so what you presented would look more like

QDialog xdialog(this);
xdialog.setLayout(new QGridLayout);
xidalog.layout()->addWidget(someWidgetPtr);

QDialog xdialog(this);
xdialog.setLayout(new QGridLayout);
xidalog.layout()->addWidget(someWidgetPtr);
