widget layout: dont stretch vertically

Somehow i a missing something when working with layouts.
I have a widget that contains a vertical layout, which in turn contains two horizontal layouts.
They arrange just fine, but stretch both vertically and horizontally when i resize the widget.
I want the vertical layout to only stretch horizontally, but no matter what i change in the object properties, it doesnt have ANY effect.

Unfortunately, most tutorials are fully satisfied with stretching in both directions...
