How to copy desktop file into ubuntu?

I have Download ubuntu and virtual machine... for run my lengthy c++ program in this... But i am not able to copy desktop file to ubuntu...
Please help me if everybody know about this problem...
for this I firstly open the virtul box... and going to setting>
after that Shared folders>>
then i choose folder in which my note pad file their....
I can't able to select note pad file directly ...I don't know how... that's why I select the folder In which my note pad file their...
After that when I open ubuntu destop and other where I don't able to see my file...
I don't know what to do copy a desktop file into the ubuntu...
Actually, first time I have use this ubuntu and Virtual box... So I haven't idea what to do....
